We all know that fear exists in every human being for without it you might be lead to be seriously injured or worse yet death. But is that really true? Does this kind of fear that protects us from harm stop us from success?
Some Myths and Truths of Fear
Fear begins in the mind through the manifestation of a thought.
Myth #1: The thoughts that are in my mind are all true because I created them.
Truth #1: Because the thought is in your mind doesn’t mean its true. In fact, noted expert in the field of psychological programing, Erika Bugbee states, “In my experience about 95% of a person’s thoughts are not true.” Most thoughts, 95% of them, originate in the subconscious and are only given life in the conscious. This can be powerful knowledge because we have the ability to either choose to believe them as true or choose to dismiss them as meaningless.
Myth #2: Fear is good and for my benefit.
Truth #2: If fear is so good, why do the vast majority of people live with some form of poverty (pay check to pay check), no freedom of time or are overweight or unhealthy? Whether you want to admit it or not, you become what you think about. If 95% of your thoughts are bogus and not true, then you’ll become the object of false thoughts. People that are financially independent, have time freedom and are healthy have overcome the inner voice; those 95% of thoughts that are bogus, and realized that most fear is unhealthy.
The Six Ghost of Fear
According to one of the greatest authors on creating success, Napoleon Hill, in his book Think and Grow Rich, describes the six ghosts of fear. He discovered that almost all our fearful thoughts can be linked to one of these six ghosts and thus, you become the object of your fear. In other words, you’ll obtain what you fear the most.
His six fears in order of prominence (by the way, he wrote the book in 1937).
1. The fear of poverty (this might explain why only 5% of our population (1 in 20) control 95% of the wealth in America).
2. The fear of criticism (afraid of making the phone call or saying something to grab a hold of an opportunity because you feel the person will criticize you.
3. The fear of ill health (Do you see the pattern in the top three as it relates to the biggest problems in our society; money, debt and being overweight and out of shape).
4. The fear of the loss of love of someone.
5. The fear of old age.
6. The fear of death.
Notice that most of our fearful thoughts are about money. Do you see the correlation between those that seem to have it all and those that don’t. Most people fear not having enough and end up “not having enough.” This blog is about health. It is no mystery to me why America is ill because it is 3rd on the list.
Some Tips to Overcome Fear of Success
Be a big picture person. Focus on what is would look like, feel like and sound like to have the kind of abundance you seek. Don’t get bogged down in the detail. Fear will really manifest it self in the overwhelming number of detail. Trust me when I tell you the details will all take care of themselves. Just get started after all a 10,000 mile journey begins with the first step.
Give yourself a break. It’s really okay to fail at a step or task in your life. Thomas Edison made a fortune failing! You’re just a person. You’re not perfect. Recognize your talents and forgive yourself for you mistakes and weaknesses. Move on. Every successful person has tons of failure stories to tell.
Ask my seven courage questions. When I’m faced with a situation that stops me from moving forward I ask myself these seven questions and then state an important and powerful affirmation.
1. What am I afraid of right now?
2. What am I trying to avoid?
3. If I wasn’t afraid, what would I do differently?
4. What do I fear other people might think of me?
5. What would I have to change to be courageous?
6. What’s the worst that could happen?
7. And if it happens, then what?
